Gross Motor/ Outdoor Play

When intentionally planned for by interactive adults, Gross motor play and learning can support all four developmental domains; social emotional, physical, language and literacy and cognitive.  Outdoor gross motor play experiences are just as important as those indoors, as they are essential to a child's overall health and well-being.  Natural elements of weather and nature provide pleasurable sensory experiences that promote good health.  Weather conditions do not always permit outdoor play. Both indoor/outdoor motor play experiences are key to physical health.  Where gross motor play is physically conducive, children should have access to a full range of gross motor development with equipment that encourages and supports running, climbing, throwing, kicking, balancing, jumping, pedaling, etc.

One of the greatest resources teachers have is each other. Collaboration and sharing has proven to contribute to our success, development and growth.  Such growth can be stunted by isolation and holding onto inhibitors.  Growth depends on having the professional courage to believe and invest in yourself enough to breakthrough a comfort zone while learning newer and better ways of benefiting children as they learn and grow.  Until this happens, the students we care for and teach can only grow as far as we have grown ourselves.  We owe it to ourselves and our students to never stop growing.
