Cooking

During cooking experiences, children have a rare treat of doing what grown-ups get to do.  It gives them a glimpse into the adult world as cooking can require the use of tools that are not always suited for young children. Children learn how food is prepared and how eating the right foods contribute to good health.

Cooking provides hands-on experiences with abstract concepts that can be difficult for children.  Cooking provides opportunities to organize ingredients, follow recipe sequence and follow multi-step directions while  learning numerous math, science, social studies and technology concepts.

One of the greatest resources teachers have is each other. Collaboration and sharing has proven to contribute to our success, development and growth.  Such growth can be stunted by isolation and holding onto inhibitors.  Growth depends on having the professional courage to believe and invest in yourself enough to breakthrough a comfort zone while learning newer and better ways of benefiting children as they learn and grow.  Until this happens, the students we care for and teach can only grow as far as we have grown ourselves.  We owe it to ourselves and our students to never stop growing.
