Multicultural / Diversity
Diverse classroom communities are made up of children from various cultures, languages, abilities, traditions, religions, and ethnic backgrounds, etc. Diversity needs to be celebrated throughout the year to support acceptance and respect of the cultural backgrounds and family situations of ALL children in the classroom. The teacher should learn about and adapt to the cultural needs of each student they teach. A diverse classroom is one in which, the teacher plans experiences that broaden children’s perspectives and encourage appreciation of diversity. This acceptance is supported by the books read, the activities completed, and the lessons taught. The teacher models and demonstrates positive responses as he/she listens to and respects the children's diverse ideas, needs and thoughts. It is vital to explore and honor the culture, language, heritage backgrounds and traditions of each child and family within the classroom community.
